Vision: No student hungry
Mission: To provide 1 million meals annually across the U.S. by 2030, promoting healthier bodies and minds
1. Why We Exist
California operates the largest community college system in the nation, serving 1.8 million students, yet nearly 48% experience food insecurity and 1 in 5 faces outright hunger. With rising living costs, long commutes, multiple jobs, and family responsibilities, thousands of students skip meals just to afford rent, books, or transportation. Hunger affects their ability to concentrate, participate, complete assignments, maintain mental well-being, and ultimately stay enrolled. When students cannot eat, they cannot learn — and California loses future nurses, teachers, engineers, lab technicians, early-childhood educators, and essential workers. This crisis is not unique to California. The patterns we see here reflect a nationwide challenge.
2. What We Do
World Food Movement California provides fresh, hot, chef-prepared meals directly on community college campuses - always free, always dignified, always barrier-free. Students do not need to complete forms, prove income, or navigate any stigma. They simply receive a high-quality meal that enables them to learn and succeed.
WFM-CA draws on the expertise of the Akshaya Patra Foundation, one of the world’s largest and most respected meal programs with over 5 billion meals served. We adapt that operational excellence to California, emphasizing food safety, culturally diverse menus, sustainability, efficient meal production, and cost-effective delivery.
3. Our Impact in California
In our first year, WFM-CA has served 25,000+ fresh meals at community colleges including De Anza, Foothill, West Valley, Chabot, Las Positas, San Jose City College, Ohlone campuses where more than 60% of students report basic-needs insecurity. Administrators and instructors consistently observe that students with reliable access to meals demonstrate stronger concentration in class, improved attendance, greater confidence, and more consistent credit completion.
For many students, the meal they receive from WFM-CA is the only full meal they eat that day - a small intervention that produces remarkable improvements in academic persistence and well-being. As our California programs grow, they are also informing the national model now expanding into additional states.
4. How We Operate
WFM-CA partners with certified commercial kitchens and experienced food-service providers to prepare meals at scale while maintaining exceptional quality and safety standards. Meals are transported to campuses through an efficient, volunteer-supported logistics network designed to maximize reach and minimize cost.
Our model prioritizes high-quality ingredients, culturally relevant menus that resonate with California’s diverse student population, sustainable packaging and production methods, and intentional planning that limits food waste. Everything from meal design to service flow is built around the dignity, comfort, and real needs of community college students.
5. Why Your Support Matters
Supporting WFM-CA helps students stay in school, graduate on time, and enter California’s critical workforce sectors. Every meal keeps a student focused, confident, and capable of continuing their education. Your contribution not only strengthens California’s communities and talent pipeline - it fuels the early stages of a national movement to end student hunger in higher education.
