Libros Schmibros is a bilingual lending library in the Boyle Heights neighborhood
of Los Angeles. We put books into people's hands, in Spanish and English, 5
days a week, every week. Boyle Heights is a book desert. Since 2010, we've given
away nearly 20,000 books. We have created a place where anybody can walk in
and find good books and good company. In addition, we show movies, host
public conversations and podcasts, teach classes, install the occasional pop-up
around town, read books to kids, lead field trips, and essentially do whatever we
can think of to champion the pleasures of reading and its power to change
lives. The Libros Schmibros Lending Library is the headquarters for many
community and youth focused creative arts and literature projects: Summer
Fellowships for Boyle Heights college-bound high school students, the Mexican
Philosophy Reading Group, Eastside Cineclub, Hora de Cuentos/Children's Story
Hour, the Women's Creative Writing Workshop, the Libros Latinidad Beyond
Borders Podcast, and more. We encourage everyone to experience the joys of
reading, to think about careers in the arts, and to pursue training and networking
opportunities that emanate from their Libros experiences. Located in the historic
Boyle Heights Hotel building at 103 Boyle N. Ave, the library is an intimate and
welcoming space where individuals and community groups gather to read, share
ideas, and find civic engagement opportunities.
