A pediatric cancer diagnosis is a sudden, shattering crisis that disrupts every aspect of a family's life. Every year in Israel, approx. 1,500 children are treated in oncology units, with 500 newly diagnosed toddlers and children joining their ranks annually. While the clinical war against cancer is waged inside hospital wards, a secondary crisis unfolds at home: the loss of a normal childhood, social isolation, and developmental barriers.Because intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments leave children severely immunocompromised, these toddlers aged 0-7 are forbidden from attending public kindergartens, nurseries, or playgrounds. On average, a child battling cancer is forced to miss 2 to 3 years of normal educational, social, and physical development. This prolonged isolation causes significant cognitive and developmental gaps compared to their healthy peers.

Further, the physical effects of treatment - including surgical scars, motor disabilities, and hair loss - breed embarrassment, leaving these young souls feeling alienated at the very moment they need joy and play the most. Simultaneously, the family unit faces immense strain; at least one parent must sacrifice their employment to provide full-time, complex care, precipitating a catastrophic drop in household income when medical expenses are at their highest.

Addressing the void - The Kindergarten of Dreams

The Larger than Life Association, founded in 2000 by parents who lived through similar struggles, conceived the world’s first rehabilitative and educational solution: The Kindergarten of Dreams. Operated free of charge for all families regardless of religion, nationality, or gender, these facilities are custom-built to provide the safe and joyful environment that fills the void between active medical treatment and recovery.

Every Kindergarten of Dreams functions as a clinical-grade educational sanctuary. Built to meet hospital-isolation ward standards, each facility utilizes specialized sterile air-filtration systems, anti-bacterial wall paint, and sun-shielded playgrounds to protect sensitive skin and eyes from UV light dangerous during chemotherapy. On-site medical equipment - including infusion poles, oxygen cylinders, and specialized wheelchairs - ensures that children can play safely under the constant supervision of highly trained educational and para-medical professionals (including massage therapists, reflexologists, and movement specialists), who coordinate with oncology medical teams. By blending hospital-standard safety with colorful, joy-filled playgrounds, we restore a sense of regular, active childhood to these toddlers while giving their parents the peace of mind to return to work.
