An initiative to empower the marginalized children – The hope and future of our country
của Samarthanam Trust for the DisabledEvery child, given a supportive environment, has the potential to thrive in all areas of life. It is our duty to provide the best possible conditions for their growth. A child’s development involves survival, development, and protection, with active participation adding significant value. Child survival ensures they live safely and with dignity during their formative years.
In India, many children lack access to education due to poverty and limited educational services. This absence of education increases their vulnerability to child labor and crime. UN reports highlight that many Indian children with disabilities are still out of school. As of 2011, 1.4 million primary school-aged children were out of school, with 18% of girls and 14% of boys affected. The situation is worse for children with intellectual disabilities (48%), speech impairments (36%), and multiple disabilities (59%). Conflict-affected and underserved communities also face educational barriers. The UN predicts that 25 million children, including 15 million girls and 10 million boys, may never attend school if trends continue.
The Indian Constitution mandates the State to ensure all children's needs are met and their rights protected. Article 21A guarantees free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14. Article 39(f) ensures equal opportunities and protection against moral and material neglect. Article 243G and Schedule-11 focus on improving child nutrition, health, and overall well-being.
While India is making strides in inclusive education, more progress is needed. Despite various initiatives, statistics show significant gaps in child education, development, and protection. Childhood is crucial for laying the foundations for cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. This project aims to enhance the overall well-being of both disabled and non-disabled children, focusing on their physical, social, and emotional needs.
Emphasis on Education by Various Entities:
- SDG 4: Ensure inclusive, equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
- Schedule VII, Clause (ii): Promote education, including special education and vocational skills for children, women, the elderly, and the differently-abled.
- 86th Amendment Act 2002: Article 21-A guarantees free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14 as a Fundamental Right. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act was enacted to implement this right.
