PfA Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Centre, Bengaluru, is a non-profit animal welfare organization, founded in 1996 by Namrata Dugar, Alpana Bhartia, Gauri Maini Hira, and Arushi Poddar, People for Animals, Bengaluru, formed under the nationwide initiative and vision of Mrs.Maneka Gandhi. The centre rescues, treat and rehabilitates urban wild animals such as bats, kites, macaques, squirrels, spotted deer, peafowl, owls, parakeets, slender loris, snakes etc. to ultimately release them back into their natural habitats. Due to rampant encroachment of lakes, the felling of trees for metro construction and other purposes, and unplanned rapid urbanization leading to habitat loss, these animals are often injured due to accidents, electrocuted, displaced, complicated manja or spinal injuries, or orphaned. The centre is open 24x7, year-round.
We are Licensed by the Karnataka Forest Department and Recognised by the Central Zoo Authority of India, Animal Welfare Board of India.
We have always been focused on our four main principles also known as the “4 R’s”, which are Rescue, Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Release. We rescue urban wildlife of all kinds - from a tiny baby Three-Striped Palm Squirrel to a big Spotted Deer. We get nearly 30-40 rescue calls a day and our rescuers work to save these animals in need.
Since its inception, PfA Bengaluru has rescued over 33,000 urban wild animals, of 210 species. From conducting awareness drives in schools, colleges, offices, and communities, to initiating special programs, such as replenishing the water sources in fringe forests, PfA has been instrumental in the conservation of the environment and wildlife in and around Bangalore over the years. PfA also runs a pet cemetery to provide a dignified resting place for pets.
Once rescued, they are brought into our centre for treatment and recovery; we have a team of experienced veterinarians who work around the clock to save the lives of these animals, depending on the severity of their injuries they are treated, some even have to undergo surgery and other procedures. We use advanced techniques such as laser physiotherapy, we do acupuncture practice for snakes to treat spinal injuries, we perform implantation of feathers for those birds who otherwise could never fly again or recover quickly. Once the treatment is done, then comes the process of rehabilitation, this process includes taking care of the nutritional, behavioral, and environmental aspects of all the animals here at the centre. We do a lot of enrichment activities that create an environment that mimics their habitat in the wild.
Last but not least is release, which we consider as one of the happiest moments here at PfA. Once the animal has gone through the process of treatment, and rehabilitation and is fit to be released, we release the animal from the place we rescued it from, as most of the animals are territorial. Hence we believe releasing the animal from the same place it was rescued will give him/her a familiar environment. In case of the schedule I animals, we join hands with the Karnataka Forest Department for release.
Over the years PfA has initiated, launched, and organized events with Corporates to amplify the effects of urbanization on our environment. Events form an integral part of PfA as it enables us to create awareness on the situation of ecological problems that beset our countries such as shrinking habitat, animal sacrifices, cruelty to animals, and extinction of wild species of flora and fauna. We have had various corporations like Accenture, EMC, Oracle, PMC, Sierra, Toyota, OWC, Light of the Life Foundation, Incture Technologies, Selco India, Selco Foundation, Inteva Products, Intuit India, and others who have joined hands with PfA.
Apart from the Wildlife hospital, we also have a pet clinic where we provide neutering and spaying of stray dogs and cats at a very minimal price. This is to control the feral animal population in Bangalore. A lot of times these stray animals tend to attack the spotted deers and Macaques in the city. Also, as the stray animals increase in number, there is always a scarcity of food for them. Hence we intend to control this and also prevent certain diseases like Rabies, Noroviruses, Leptospirosis, Pasteurella, Salmonella, Brucella, Yersinia enterocolitica, Campylobacter, Capnocytophaga, etc.
