Every fifth child in Germany goes to school hungry because they are not adequately provided with food at home. The reasons for this are complex: socially or economically challenging family situations, demanding shift work, or difficulties in managing parenting. The consequences are lack of concentration, poor grades, social exclusion, and fewer educational opportunities.

The non-profit organization brotZeit e.V. has made it its mission to provide a free and balanced breakfast for schoolchildren at primary and special needs schools with higher support requirements. With the brotZeit breakfast, children are more focused in class and can improve their performance in the long term. The project also brings different generations together: The breakfast volunteers are actively engaged seniors. They are not only responsible for the breakfast but also care for the children, listen to them and interact with them. In doing so, they make a valuable contribution to the success of the project and start their day feeling fulfilled and as an active part of society.
