Girls Inc. of Los Angeles empowers girls to tap into their strengths and amplify their talents so they can transcend stereotypes and systemic barriers and become the leaders of today and tomorrow. Through our free, school-based programming, we help girls discover their passions, build new skills and develop the confidence to pursue their goals.
Girls Inc. LA serves 3,000 girls ages 6-18 across twelve Los Angeles Unified School District elementary, middle and high schools in under-resourced communities in South Los Angeles, Watts and Venice.
Through our STEAM Learning & Career Exploration initiative, girls participate in hands-on experiences that build curiosity, creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Project-based activities introduce students to new concepts and real-world applications while helping them see themselves in fields where women - and women of color in particular - remain underrepresented.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through career workshops, field trips, conversations with women professionals and other experiences that expose girls to a wide range of industries and career pathways. Students learn about different professions, visit workplaces, meet women across industries and begin connecting what they are learning today with possibilities for college and their post-secondary lives.
Support for this project helps provide curriculum and program materials, hands-on STEAM activities, trained instructors, career workshops, field trips and transportation and other experiences that give girls opportunities to explore, ask questions and start to become the scientists, engineers, artists, entrepreneurs and leaders of the future.
