Shipyard Trust for the Arts' (STAR) mission statement “Connecting Art and Community,” summarizes the multiplicity of communities we serve. 1. Our close to 300 artists who rent affordable studio space at the Hunters Point Shipyard 2. The community artists from the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood and other diverse San Francisco artists, who are at extreme risk of displacement from their work spaces, and for whom we strive to make future affordable work spaces available. 3. The Bayview Hunters Point community, who we want to re-connect with the Shipyard. With more than half a century of the Shipyard being closed to civilians, they only heard tales of ships from the Bikini atoll bombing being decontaminated here and animal experiments with radiation, making this an undesirable and scary place. We want to make sure that now that it is being cleaned up, residents can and want to benefit from it. 4. The larger San Francisco and Bay Area art audiences, who we strive to connect with to educate them about the value of real art in their lives and build a customer base for our present and future artists.

Shipyard Artists began populating the abandoned buildings of the former Hunters point Naval Shipyard in 1984. An artist named Jacques Terzian rehabilitated multiple buildings, sub-divided them and rented them out to artists, building the largest studio community in the United States.
